Awesome University courses for CS Students and future Entrepreneurs
So, for all of my fellow aspiring and upcoming Entrepreneurs who want to create their own Startups and companies after uni, here is a list of subjects that are extremely interesting that you should enroll to if you have an option to do so!
Note: I took some of these courses voluntarily even though I wasn’t “officially” enrolled in them and graded and would advise anyone to do exactly the same! It will be worth your time trust me!
Entrepreneurship
This is the most basic and important subject. If you want to be an entrepreneur, you should learn the art of Entrepreneurship and get the most basic idea on how business are created, how they operate, what are the Lean Startup principles and afterwards create successful Startups. You will get a good grasp of the processes and principles that are ought to be understood in business, for example differentiating between cash flow vs profit, reading P&L statements and understanding the basics of finance and accounting.
Leadership
If you want to be a leader, you need to know how leaders are created (they can be created, they are not necessarily born with leadership skills), how to express your companies mission and vision internally and externally, how to motivate people and most importantly the importance of empathy and understandment towards your coworkers and employees. It is also a great reminder to not take people at face value and to take your time to uncover all of the “layers” that some people are prone to use as a defence mechanism.
Educational Psychology
I know this is a weird one, but hear me out. In order to create awesome products, you need to be able to understand humans and the nature of their brain. This subject is gonna give you an excellent intro into how human brain is made in the biological sense, how it functions, what are the triggers that are prone to be activated in your brain, what are habits and how they are created and lastly lay out basic principles of pedagogy which are coincidentally also extremely useful when dealing with adults.
Human Computer Interaction / UX
Human Computer Interaction is a super interesting subject if you are someone who is a big fan of product design and creating awesome user experiences. It gives you a basic understanding of design principles, patterns, rules and heuristics that are widely used in the Design industry, explains the underlaying psychological principles that are taken into consideration when designing products and overall gives you a good intro into human-centric design. If you are somebody who thinks about entering into Product Management, this subject is gonna help you a lot.
Kudos to all of my professors that were real Gs and made these subjects interesting: dr. Malcom Duerod, Selma Delalic, Senad Becirovic and last but not least Nihad Obralic.
That is it, keep learning and improving!
